What is HSK ?

Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) is the Chinese Proficiency Test, a standardized exam designed to assess the Chinese language proficiency of non-native speakers.
It is officially recognized by the People’s Republic of China and administered by the Chinese Ministry of Education.

Everything about the HSK Exam –

HSK Levels: There are six levels of the HSK exam, namely HSK 1 to HSK 6, each representing a different level of proficiency testing including writing, listening, and reading skills.
These levels correspond to the Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages (CLPS) standards and the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

HSK 1 and HSK 2 are basic levels.

HSK 3 and HSK 4 are intermediate levels.

HSK 5 and HSK 6 are advanced levels.

Note – The number of HSK levels will increase from 6 to 9 this year to bring HSK closer to CEFR and make “three stages and nine levels.”

Test Format:

1. Listening Comprehension: Test takers listen to recorded passages and answer questions.
2. Reading Comprehension: Test takers read passages and answer questions.
3. Writing: Requires writing characters or short essays, depending on the level.
4. Oral Test: Conversation or presentation, evaluated by an examiner.

Note – HSK 1 and 2 only consist of listening and reading sections.
From HSK3 onwards all the questions are presented only in Chinese characters. The tests consist of three sections: listening, reading (all multiple choices) and writing.

HSK Format in India-
In India, the HSK exam is available in two formats: the internet-based HSK and the paper-based HSK.
Regardless of the format chosen, candidates are required to visit a physical HSK test centre for examination.
Both formats maintain identical levels of difficulty, test content, and scoring standards.

Scoring:

1. HSK Score: Each level has its own scoring system, typically ranging from 0 to 300 points.
2. Passing Score: The passing score varies depending on the level but generally ranges from 120 to 180 out of 300.

Test Duration:

1. Test Length: The duration varies depending on the level, typically ranging from 35 minutes to 2 hours and 15 minutes.
2. Oral Test: This part usually lasts around 20 minutes.

Test Frequency:

1. Availability: HSK exams are typically available multiple times a year, with test dates scheduled by Hanban and its affiliated test centres.
2. Registration: Test takers need to register for the exam in advance.

Other HSK Exams:

1. HSKK (Hanyu Shuiping Kouyu Kaoshi): Focuses specifically on speaking proficiency and is divided into three levels —
   (i) HSKK (Elementary)
   (ii) HSKK (Intermediate)
   (iii) HSKK (Advanced)
2. BCT (Business Chinese Test): Assesses Chinese language proficiency for foreigners engaged in business activities.
   The test consists of two relatively independent tests: BCT (Listening & Reading) and BCT (Speaking & Writing).Note – The candidates can sit for one or both of them at a time. There is no limit to candidates’ age, education, or Chinese proficiency level.
3. Youth Chinese Test (YCT), another Chinese language proficiency, assesses Mandarin proficiency for school-going children.
   YCT is divided into writing and speaking tests, independent of each other.

Test Fees:
 HSK Exam in India, Fees range from ₹ 1500 to ₹ 6500, depending on the level.

For HSKK, YCT, and BCT exams – fees range between ₹ 500 to ₹ 4000 depending upon the type of test and level.
